The Policy Co-Design Lab
The Policy Co-Design Lab implements a four-step approach to initiate and support the integration of responsible innovation concepts into the sector of protein transition.
First, the RI-ProT team collaborates with stakeholders (policy-makers, venture capital specialists, entrepreneurs, innovators, scientists) from the alternative proteins sectors to identify current and future challenges associated with the protein transition in Germany and Europe. Using system analysis with causal loop diagrams, we identify powerful feedback loops, systemic problems and leverage points for positive change. Additionally, possible goals for responsible innovations towards protein alternatives are collected and assessed to detect potential goal conflicts.
Second, project members identify policies and regulations which currently support or constrain alternative protein innovations. An assessment by policy experts aims to establish a shared understanding how manifold policies and regulations interact as barriers or promoters of responsible alternative protein innovations.
Thirdly, we collaborate with experts to collect and jointly assess policy instruments that could contribute to achieve or accelerate responsible innovation goals in the alternative protein field.
Fourth, in consecutive workshops, policy-makers and stakeholders collaborate to develop a coherent policy mix that supports responsible innovation for protein alternatives and addresses challenges and goals identified in step one.
The results of this work package are disseminated to different relevant audiences through tailored communication channels such as policy briefs, scientific publications, and publications for non-scientific audience.
